REFLECTION FOR WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17, 2024

SEEING AND BELIEVING IN JESUS, THE BREAD OF LIFE

“For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day.” Jn. 6:40

Our gospel reference today formed part of Jesus’ teaching and claims that he is “the Bread of Life.” By this Jesus meant that, just as God sent manna from heaven to sustain the physical life of his people in the desert, so He has sent His Son to sustain the spiritual lives of His people.

Our Spiritual life is actually Sanctifying Grace, our living relationship with God, through His Son Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Here Jesus claims to be our spiritual Food and offers himself to produce God’s life within us. He promised to those who believe in his unbroken friendship with God, and a share in his own Resurrection on the last day and Eternal Life with him in Heaven.

But do we believe in Jesus and all He had said and promised? To believe Jesus is something that must deepen in us with every passing day. If we have faith in Jesus, we can also admit that we do not have faith enough. From Jesus’ teaching on the “Bread of Life, He calls us to see Him, and believe in Him.

When Jesus first spoke these words to the crowd, they saw His physical presence. But many of them did not see beyond the surface. They saw His miracles, heard His teaching, but very few saw the deeper reality of Jesus as the Son of the Eternal Father and the Savior of the World.

If we are to believe in Jesus and all that He is, then we must first see Him. One of the best ways to foster this “seeing” of Jesus is to gaze at Him in the Blessed Sacrament or Most Holy Eucharist. When you attend Mass or spend time in adoration and look upon the Most Holy Eucharist, what do you see? Do you see the Eternal Son, His holy divinity?

As we stand or kneel before our Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament exposed on the Altar, it is easy to become distracted. It is easy to allow our minds to wander to the many other aspects of our daily lives and to fail to see the eternal Son of God as He is present to us on the Altar.

Reflect, today, upon the way we see and look at Jesus. If we want to deepen our faith, our belief, then we must start with our sight. We must start by considering how we look at Jesus, present in the Most Holy Eucharist. If we are blessed to be with Him this day at Mass or in adoration, let us examine the way to see Him. Gaze at Him. Make an intentional act of faith in His divine presence. We need to acknowledge His Godhead, His glory, His holiness, and His sacred presence. If we can look beyond the surface and lift the veil that covers His glory, then this holy gift of sight will give way, also, to the gift of profound faith.

Lord Jesus, I thank You profoundly for the way You come to me in the Most Holy Eucharist. I thank You for Your divine presence and glory. Help me to see beyond the veil of the appearance of bread and wine so that I can see more clearly Your divinity. As I see Your divine presence, dear Lord, help me to profess my belief in You with greater certitude and faith. Jesus, I trust in You.
